When conflict occurs, its important to have some good communication tools to resolve the issue rather than react to the person who sees the issue different.
We‘ll teach you the basics of a tool called “Speaker Listener Technique.” There are two hats to wear, so to speak, with this: a Speaker Hat and a Listener Hat. We’ll unpack a few simple rules for each in this tip:
Rules for Speaker
- Speak for yourself, don’t mind read
- Keep statements brief (don’t go on and on)
- Stop and let the other paraphrase
Rules for the listener
- Paraphrase what you hear
- Focus on the speaker
- Don’t rebut or interrupt
Rules for Both
- Speaker has the floor, keeps until understood
- Share the floor by switching Hats/roles
